Given the vitally important role of scientific and technological research in modern societies it is of paramount importance to ensure structures that could offer funding opportunities. Horizon 2020 is currently the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme for offering such opportunities. Horizon 2020 is divided into seven sections, which vary in terms of their focus. One of these sections is Science with and for Society. This is expected to hold an instrumental role in building capacities and developing innovative ways of connecting science to society.

It is expected to facilitate interactions among the various societal actors (researchers, citizens, policy makers, business, third sector organisations etc.) in the context of research and innovation processes so as to better align both the processes and their outcomes with the values, needs and expectations of European society. This approach to research and innovation is called Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). In broad terms, RRI implies anticipating and assessing potential implications and societal expectations with regard to research and innovation. RRI is closely connected to science education in that it sets out to design and implement a research and innovation policy that, among others, will promote formal and informal science education and will enhance interest in science education and science-related careers.
