About Malta

Malta lies in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.  It lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily, 284 km east of Tunisia and 333 km north of Libya. The country covers just over 316 km2, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries. Malta is a favorite tourist destination due to its warm climate, and architectural and historical heritage which includes nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Malta is just a few hours' flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections with the main international airports. The national airline, Air Malta, operates flights to and from all the major airports in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Other main airlines and various low-cost carriers also operate regularly to and from Malta, particularly during the summer months.

For further information about Malta please visit the official site: visitmalta.com

Climate in Malta

The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, warm and sporadically wet autumns, and short, cool winters with adequate rainfall. Summers are warm, dry and very sunny. The weather usually starts warming up in April, which is then followed with a long spell of hot, dry weather. It rarely rains from April to August. July and August are Malta's hottest months with daytime temperatures usually above 30ºC (86ºF) and quite often also above 35ºC (95ºF). During this time many people spend time at the sea enjoying the Mediterranean waters.

Currency

The main currency in Malta is the Euro. Participants from outside the Eurozone can exchange currency at any bank in Malta.

Conference Venue

The conference venue is still to be determined. Information will be uploaded as soon as the venue is confirmed.

Conference

How can we engage children in Primary Science Inquiry?

Pri-Sci-Net Final Conference

Malta 16-18 July 2014

The Pri-Sci-Net group invites you to its International Conference which will be held on 16-18 July 2014 in Malta. This conference will bring together the work and initiatives of the partnership during the past three years. As the project has been doing in the past three years, the conference will serve to bring together teachers and education researchers and to provide space to both groups to share their work, experiences and insights with respect to doing Inquiry science with children in the age range of 3-11 years.

The conference will include:

  • Keynote speakers in science education:
    • Dr. Lady Sue Dale Tunnicliffe, Institute of Education, University of London;
    • Prof. Costas Costantinou, University of Cyprus.
      • Do children have any need for science learning? What does existing research tell us?
  • Keynote presentation by a young researcher working in the area of inquiry in primary science (winner of the Certificate of Excellence in Research in IBSE at primary level);
  • Space for teachers and schools obtaining the Certificate of Excellence in IBSE at primary level to present and share their work in inquiry-science with other teachers; and
  • Practical workshops in inquiry for teachers.

The conference is of interest to: primary school teachers; school leadership teams; primary science teacher trainers;   primary science education researchers and all those who have a love for science and who wish to see young children inquire about the world around them!
